How I Spent The Twelfth Week Of The Rest Of My Life

Taking pictures has never been so exhausting.  Along with packing up my first two boxes to move, I also took snapshots of all of the furniture that I'm trying to give away so I don't have to dispose of it any other way.  I knew I didn't have a lot of it, but uploading photos to Facebook has never been one of my favorite pastimes.

Here is the end result: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?fbid=10150181061592627&id=773162626&aid=366844

So far I have given away a bookcase, a blender, a toaster, and a frying pan.  The stuff that I really want to get rid of (like my computer desk and my kitchen table) have not been claimed yet.  I figure if no one wants my stereo or other small things, I can take those with me.  I half want to pawn my television, but I never want to buy it back so I don't think that's good business practices.  I basically want to start fresh in my new city of everything that isn't too expensive to replace.

At least I'm making a clean start in a lot of mental ways.  Three of the boxes that I sorted today were from my old work desk.  I threw out a lot of stuff.  In a new job, I don't want to carry remnants of the old one anymore that I want to carry remnants of my old apartment to a new one.

Three boxes fit into part of one.  I consider that a win.  Not like last week's spending.  I have been better this week since next week (unbelievably) is my trip to the Wisconsin Dells.  Though I did get enough done today (and will again on Monday) to feel like it is a justified reward.

Here's how I "spent" last week:

TUESDAY, MARCH 22 ($10.00)

  • 6:55 p.m. McCormick Tribune YMCA - Free.  Even though I spent most of the day cleaning my apartment, which was a workout in itself, I decided to go to the gym anyway.
  • 8:27 p.m. Marble - $10.00.  Having gone to this place on the bar crawl a few weeks before, I didn't have a chance to get food.  I wanted to go back and try it.  Tuesdays were listed on Foursquare as a veggie sloppy joe special.  It turned out they had discontinued it, but I ended up getting an amazing pizza, a beer, and some chips and salsa for under $10.00.  With tip, it was $10.00 even.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 23 ($15.00)

  • 10:49 a.m. Victory's Banner - $15.00.  This vegetarian brunch place had been on my list for a long time.  It took going with some meat eaters to finally cross it off.  I had always thought it was an elaborate place, but it turned out I could have gone by myself and no one would have noticed.  Now that I know it's casual, I might go back once more.
  • 12:12 p.m. Toys 'R' Us - Free.  I tried to return an MP3 player I bought at Thanksgiving but no dice.  Not even a store credit.  But I'm not giving that away for free.  It's completely unopened!

THURSDAY, MARCH 24 ($14.00)

  • 12:54 p.m. McCormick Tribune YMCA - Free.  Even though I'm still well on pace to reach 100 times at the gym before I move, when the temperatures dropped in Chicago, my desire to go did as well.
  • 2:45 p.m. Conoce Mi Panama - $10.00.  Oh my goodness.  I don't know how I passed up this amazing restaurant for so long.  They have the best veggie protein beef chunks that I have ever had.  I actually still crave them typing this a week later.  And their $6.95 lunch special is incredible!
  • 8:52 p.m. Logan Theater - $4.00.  After watching the first game of the evening in basketball, I decided to stop stressing (and not break my streak of going every week while I still live in Chicago) and go see a kid's movie - Gnomeo & Juliet.  It kind of sucked.  But while I was there, Arizona started beating Duke soundly, so I got home to good news.

FRIDAY, MARCH 25 ($10.00)

  • 9:17 p.m. Philly's Best - $10.00.  During football season, I carry out from the hoagie place by my apartment a lot.  It tastes just as good during basketball season.  My refrigerator was completely empty, so I didn't have much choice.

SATURDAY, MARCH 26 ($33.00)

  • 12:45 p.m. McCormick Tribune YMCA - Free.  I think I should never get a large hoagie from Philly's Best again.  There is too much stuff in it that my stomach doesn't like.  I woke up feeling like crap.  It took a trip to the gym to, mostly, piece myself back together.
  • 2:44 p.m. Cafe Del Mundo - $5.00.  Meeting up with my peeps in Irving Park at 3:00 p.m. was kind of a weird time considering my food schedule.  Having not eaten breakfast because I felt like crap, I had to grab a grilled cheese sandwich since my blood sugar was running low even though we were driving to a restaurant in Brookfield.
  • 4:46 p.m. La Cabanita - $9.00.  The Mexican place in Brookfield turned out to be pretty good.  They have great homemade tortillas.  Though I've had better chile rellenos other places.
  • 5:12 p.m. Galloping Ghost Arcade - $15.00.  All you can play all day arcade games right off a Metra stop?  I'm glad I didn't discover this sooner!  They have every game that I could never play enough growing up because I always ran out of quarters.  The only thing I regret now playing was the four player D&D type arcade game they had since I could never round up four people to quest.
  • 9:16 p.m. Brixie's - $4.00.  I had heard a lot about this place.  All of it good.  The name of the band playing that night which, thankfully, I didn't stay long enough to hear was named Bifunkal.  Right then I knew I would hate it.  That and there was a group of douchebags doing a bar crawl.  It wasn't terrible, but it did not live up to reputation.
  • 10:42 p.m. Galloping Ghost Arcade - Free.  After numbing my wrist with beer, I felt well enough to play still more Q*Bert.  I played until almost midnight when I was going to take the Metra home.  Thankfully, I was offered a ride.

SUNDAY, MARCH 27 ($15.83)

  • 11:48 a.m. McCormick Tribune YMCA - Free.  My wrists hurt a ton from all the video gaming of the night before.  I just used this as an excuse to stay off the elliptical.  Playing video games for six hours is almost like an actual physical activitiy!
  • 6:31 p.m. Aldi - $15.83.  My basketball bracket went from high flying to dead in the course of two games (Kansas and North Carolina loses).  This made me lose my appetite.  I went grocery shopping anyway.

MONDAY, MARCH 28 ($120.36)

  • 12:03 p.m. Cafe Con Leche - Free.  It makes me sad that this is probably the last time I will have my favorite chilaquiles in Chicago.  A friend of mine treated me to them which made this situation hurt a little bit less.
  • 1:14 p.m. Target - $100.19.  Picking up my happy pills before I ran out of happy pills was a really odd situation for me.  Usually I'm out for a day or two.
  • 2:11 p.m. Home Depot - $16.27.  I didn't want to use the boxes that I used for moving a couple of years ago because I had no idea of their structural integrity at this point, so I bought new moving boxes.  I had no idea how much they would cost because in the past, I had just used boxes from work.  They're really cheap.  I also had to buy a tape dispenser - which is why the total was so high.
  • 6:25 p.m. Bubbleland - $3.90.  Washing socks has never been my favorite thing to do, but at least this load cleared out the bottom of my closet.

So that's $218.19.  Not a bad week without the meds.  Plus I just got my tax refund and my unemployment check so I'm at a good balance.  I have to make sure that I don't overspend in the Dells since I've already paid for hotel and train.  My total money spent while I've been unemployed is $1971.06.

Every Pair Of Socks I Keep Is A Pair Of Socks I Have To Move

When old dudes say that they have "socks older than you" I now know what they meant.  The most worrisome part of my cleaining, my closet, is now reaching its apex.  And what I discovered was that I have so many socks that I could probably go two months without washing them.  That is, if I kept all of them.  And if I wanted the disaster area that was my closet floor to reemerge.  My goodness.  If I hadn't moved now, I probably would have ended up with socks older than most high schoolers in the bottom of my closet.

But now they're all in one of two bags.  If they had holes in them, they are in a garbage bag that I will be taking down to the dumpsters after I hit send on this blog entry.  If they didn't, they're in my laundry backpack to be washed.  When they are done being laundered, if any sock ends up not being part of a matched pair, I'm donating them to charity with any of my other clothes that have holes in them (and some I just don't want anymore).

Thankfully, I didn't find my rodent friend of a decayed carcass thereof in the bottom of my closet.  This was why I was so worried about this part of the cleaning.

Anyhow, on a happier note, I have decided that I am definitely going to drive my stuff to Washington D.C.

I'm going to see a Seaweed reunion show in New York City on the 22nd, so to take the train there is an added expense anyhow.  If I have a car in D.C., I can pass through New York City on the way home.  And this will also let me drive through Detroitish and hug my parents and the like since I'm moving twice as far away.  Not like I visit them now, but at least it's currently more possible on a whim.

So, here's my theoretical ONE-WEEK itinerary:

APRIL 18 Car in Chicago to load up in evening.
APRIL 19 Chicago, IL -> Woodbridge, VA.  If I have to stop, this leaves an extra day.  The trip says 12 hours, 48 minutes.  I'll just have to leave early.
APRIL 20 Car in Woodbridge to unload into storage unit (or finishing getting there and then unloading).
APRIL 21 Woodbridge, VA -> New York City, NY.  Worse case scenario, I do this the morning of the concert.
APRIL 22 Car in New York City.
APRIL 23 New York City -> Northville, MI.  Another 11 hour drive.  If I need to stop in the middle, it will limit my time in Detroitish.
APRIL 24 Car in Northville, MI
APRIL 25 Northville, MI -> Chicago, IL

The car will be about $230.00 plus about $90.00 more for insurance so $320.00 (the train to NYC would have been $120.00 and sending my stuff via mail would easily be far over $100.00).  The gas will be expensive I'm sure.  But I'm using my tax return to pay for my move to D.C. (I think it's appropriate) and so the $600.00 or so combined will be under that mark.  Each additional day would be about $35.00 more if I wanted to not rush it at all.  A day and a half in New York is probably fine since I'll be living so close.

I'm going to play around with the dates a bit and probably will go for eight or nine days.  It's kind of exciting to move this way, I have to be honest.  Plus making sure I can fit everything in a car will mean that I have more desire to throw out useless things - like infinite pairs of socks.

How I Spent The Eleventh Week Of The Rest Of My Life

Back in the day of this blog (it really is starting to feel like I've been unemployed for far more than two months), I mentioned that I wanted to take a vacation somewhere warm.  Well that never materialized because I started worrying about spending too much money.  Instead, on a whim yesterday, since I had never been, I planned a trip to the Wisconsin Dells for a couple of weeks from now.

I figure after all of the cleaning and packing that I'll be doing in the time leading up to them the remainder of this week and then next week, I'll deserve a bit of rest and relaxation.  Though my plans to pack up the clothes I need and giving away the ones I don't want today failed.  Brunch at Victory's Banner was just too satisfying.  But I did throw out three garbage bags worth of "junk" that I might have at one time called "memories" yesterday.

CLEAN...Um, ER.

Anyhow, back to my exciting adventure.  I decided to take the train there with gas prices being what they are (and still not owning a car of my own renting a car for a few days would be a pretty penny).  The train station in Wisconsin Dells is right downtown.  I may still need to rent a car for a couple of days but $45 for two days so I can get to the more outer parts of town and actually into nature beats $250 to rent and drive from Chicago.  The train ticket is $80 round trip.  The hotel is $195 after taxes for four nights and three full days (the only downside to taking the train is that it gets to the Dells at 5:30 p.m. and leaves the Dells at noon, not an optimal schedule).

All in all, with tours and water parks and mini-golf and meals and the like, I figure this trip will cost a little below $500.00.  Far less than going some place warm would have.  Not as exciting, but I don't want to leave this part of the midwest without having been to the Wisconsin Dells at least once.  Once on the east coast, I am not going to take over 11 years to get to the Maryland Shore, that's for sure.

I'm going from the afternoon of the 5th until the morning of the 9th of April.

Last week, I managed to not spend a lot of money *most* of the week.  But another holiday meant a bit of loose pockets.  Now that I'm saving for a trip, however, I have more reason not to spend.

Here's how I "spent" last week:

TUESDAY, MARCH 15 ($6.15)
  • 2:24 p.m. Bubbleland - $3.90.  I think my landlady has just given up on fixing the washing machine with how many of the tenants are moving out.  I had to buy fabric softener this time which was the difference in price.
  • 7:58 p.m. McCormick Tribune YMCA - Free.  My desire to watch the kickoff of the MLS season for as little a price as possible led me to watch it at the gym.
  • 9:34 p.m. Dorothy's Liquors - $2.25.  I don't know why I didn't start having a post-gym PBR here long ago.  I think I was probably a little scared of the clientele before I actually went in.  It's actually kind of nice and welcoming here.  And, yeah, $1.25 PBR.
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 16 (Free)

THURSDAY, MARCH 17 ($53.68)
  • 12:11 p.m. McCormick Tribune YMCA - Free.  This was the first time since college I had actually gotten to view the start of the NCAA tournament live.  I watched the opening tip at home and then went to the gym.  When I first got there my pick in the first game, Clemson, was winning.  By the time I left, they had lost.  It set a bad precedent.
  • 2:17 p.m. Revolution Brewing Company - $22.00.  I know one of the bakers here.  She created a Bailey's ice cream and they just premiered a new stout called Paddy Wagon Irish.  It tasted so good and so did my peeps' creation - an Irish Car Bomb Float.  I left a little bit full of Irish happiness.
  • 3:21 p.m. Logan Theater - $4.00.  Seeing Black Swan tipsy was probably the best and worst idea that I had in the month of March.  The movie was every bit as messed up as I was, but it was really incredible.
  • 5:26 p.m. McDonald's - $2.68.  I couldn't let the entire St. Patrick's Day season go by without getting a Shamrock Shake.  Thankfully, the person I was supposed to meet at the bar for the NCAA games was running late so I had time to enjoy it in all of its deliciousness.  I wish I had gotten more than one.
  • 6:08 p.m. Logan Bar and Grill - $25.00.  Not worth any of this money.  They had the sound off and they wouldn't even turn the Michigan State game on when it started.  I was there with some people who defended the staff, but I will never set foot in this place again.
FRIDAY, MARCH 18 ($36.05)
  • 11:59 a.m. Supercuts - $16.00.  This might be my last time at this location.  I know I previously said that I was going to go to the barber by my apartment, but I'm pretty much committed to this place until I leave I think.
  • 12:51 p.m. Zad Middle Eastern Cuisine - $5.00.  I had a Groupon from this place that I first tried at an iWish lesson about a year ago.  I love everything her so much that I just blew through the $20.00 getting a couple of sides and a main.  It might be my favorite Mediterranean place outside of Albany Park though, so I was glad to give it beyond just what it would get from the Groupon.
  • 2:02 p.m. Borders - Free.  Even though I got the urge to buy a deeply discounted eReader, I resisted due to my St. Patrick's spending already.  The travel section I had loved in my favorite Borders in Chicago on Clark had already been packed up and sent back.  It was really a sad state to see the Borders almost closed.
  • 5:00 p.m. Aldi - Milwaukee - $15.05.  Knowing that I would be needing to do all of these housecleaning tasks this week, I figured I would buy a lot of groceries.  But they were out of red shopping baskets so I didn't buy as many as planned.  They were not, however, out of popsicles!
  • 7:42 p.m. McCormick Tribune YMCA - Free.  In order to not repeat my NCAA basketball expenses from the bar the day before, I watched the Friday evening games at the gym.
SATURDAY, MARCH 19 (Free)
  • 5:30 p.m. McCormick Tribune YMCA - Free.  Even though I was tempted to watch the first Fire match at the bar, the fact that I had managed to be free the day before led me to be free again.  That and my NCAA picks had already began to be crap so I saw no point in going to the bar to watch basketball.
SUNDAY, MARCH 20 ($34.76)
  • 11:26 a.m. Big Jones - $15.00.  I had been wanting to try this brunch place in Andersonville for a long time.  And it lived up to everything that I had heard about it.  I was surprised at how inexpensively I got away with the Migas, however, since there were some very pricey things on the menu.
  • 1:41 p.m. Target - $19.76.  The reason I had been going to the laundromat so much recently was that I was out of short of socks without holes in.  So I bought a pack of them.  Hopefully this will mean less laundry so I consider it an investment.
MONDAY, MARCH 21 ($4.00)
  • 2:21 p.m. North Community Bank - Free.  Cleaning my apartment, I found a couple of checks worth about $70.00.  So this was really a positive.  Still, I'll count it as a free.
  • 2:54 p.m. McCormick Tribune YMCA - Free.  It was almost weird to come here on a day without basketball after all of the recent times.  But it was also nice to have it not be as crowded as it is in the evenings.
  • 4:36 p.m. Tastee Freez - $4.00.  The first day of spring fell on a day where I didn't go to the gym and, therefore, did not think about the Tastee Freez as I passed by it.  I made up for it by getting a cake batter shake to kick off the season on this nice day.  Online I discovered that there are no Tastee Freezes in metro D.C.  I am going to have to go back at least once or twice more before I leave.
So that's $134.64.  There's no more holidays before I leave Chicago that I know of.  I hope.  Looking at that, this vacation to the Dells might not be the best idea, but I'm doing it anyway.  It might be a once in a lifetime thing.  My total money spent while I've been unemployed is $1752.87.

The Weight I Carry With These Books Is More Mental Than Physical

Everyone who knows me knows that I'm a sentimental idiot.  This is getting in the way of my getting started on the moving thing.  I have a huge collection of books that I need to get rid of - either by selling them or giving them away - and I'm having a dickens of a time letting go of a lot of them.  There's a few reasons for this:

  • Some of them make me look smart.
  • Some of them I actually love.
  • Some of them I shared adventures in Europe with (i.e. Dracula, even though I hated that book).
  • Some of them were gifts.
  • Some of them I read in college for classes I loved.

This last category is actually a pile of its own.  There's no real reason for me to keep these except for the fact that they make me look academic.  Out of date in the circles of academia, but academic just the same.

A quick and dirty count says I'm definitely parting with about 70 books.  But there are about 60 in the pile that I'm keeping for sure.  Counting these college books, the number of keeps outnumber the others by a few.

THE GIVE PILE

My goal is to get it to be more 70% sell and 30% keep.  I'm about to do another run through of the keep pile before I start boxing everything.

THE KEEP PILE

At least I know that I'll be able to get rid of the bookshelf they were all on.  Two people have already put in for it.  I'm giving it, along with most of my other furniture, away so I don't have to worry about storing it or transporting it.  It's weird, since I'm so open on most things on the internet, but I don't trust Craigslist.  I'd rather my friends and peeps get my stuff.

Though I have decided, to keep this mess from happening again, that I'm finally going to bite the bullet and get an eReader.  With the Borders in Chicago (and, to a lesser extent, in other cities) bidding adieu, their Kobo with wi-fi is priced a little over $80.00.  I consider it an investment since eBooks are cheaper and I'll be able to get through more of them since, unlike a lot of books, that thing is always portably the same size.

At least that's how I'm justifying the expense.  Maybe selling my books, I can recoup this cost anyway.  If I can figure out enough to sell.

How I Spent The Tenth Week Of The Rest Of My Life

While it might not have been the best idea to go up to Madison to protest Scott Walker considering that I want a government job, I just felt like I needed to.  While I'm hoping that it doesn't reflect poorly in my background check when I get to Metro D.C., I'm also hoping that it doesn't rekindle my travel urge.  While I was walking the streets of Wisconsin's capital, I said to myself multiple times that I wanted to pay it another visit before I move to the east coast.  There are some really nice museums.

I could always hitch a ride up there for the next protest.  We got there super early and there was nothing to do but march through the streets.  That's when people get arrested.  And, well, that's not high on my list of priorities.  Especially in Wisconsin nowaday.  So I could just skip out on all but the rally.  Though that would not be going up there in the spirit of the thing.

Anyhow, here's the government job that I applied for last Wednesday that I never posted the description of and that I'm putting in jeopardy:

Other than that bit of rabble rousing, it was a pretty quiet week.  I didn't get much done in the way of organizing my move, I spent the week recovering from an especially spendy Fat Tuesday.  It's a good thing that holiday only comes around once a year.

Here's how I "spent" last week:

TUESDAY, MARCH 8 ($55.50)

1:10 p.m. Smak-Tak - $20.00.  Since I had the entire day free on Fat Tuesday for the first time in my adult life, I decided to find a Polish restaurant that took a while to get to.  This one in the middle of Jefferson Park acutally got a Michellin recommendation.  I've had better pierogi closer to home in Avondale, but it is quite good.  And the atmosphere is hard to beat.
2:39 p.m. Oak Mill Bakery - $18.00.  I used to bring paczki into work every Ash Wednesday because I didn't want to wake up too early on Tuesday.  This would be only the second time I brought them somewhere to be consumed on Tuesday.  This is a chain with a location in Wicker Park, but I didn't know it at the time.
7:10 p.m. Farragut's - $17.50.  While the $2.50 beer was flowing freely, I only had to buy one.  We were celebrating an engagement so someone was buying.  The rest of the expense came from the fact that I had pasta delivered from nearby Ranalli's.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 9 ($9.33)

11:05 a.m. McCormick Tribune YMCA - Free.  In my new vow to get to the gym a 100th time before I leave, I fought through my hangover and upset stomach and did so.  When I was done sweating the grossness out, I felt better.  The urge to use the new Foursquare 3.0 that had rolled out the night before
8:08 p.m. Walgreens - $9.33.  My desire to spend no money on Ash Wednesday after my craziness on Fat Tuesday was overcome by the fact that it felt like the two remaining paczki I had eaten with lunch were burning a hole in my stomach.  And that I was nearly out of soap.  The Pepto Bismol I bought was a gift from above.

THURSDAY, MARCH 10 ($87.79)

4:20 p.m. McCormick Tribune YMCA - Free.  I was dragging all day due to the fact that I still felt horrible from the two paczki the day before.  I was not enjoying life.  Even the gym did not help.
6:12 p.m. Kohl's - $63.51.  I heard a commercial on the radio when I was waking up that Dockers were on sale at Kohl's.  When I got there, the sale price on Dockers wasn't great, but wandering further back into the store, there was a clearance rack where all men's pants were up to 85% discounted!  Combined the two pairs of pants I bough normally would have been $113.00 before the sale.  And I desperately needed new pants.  I'll have to come back for a bargain suit coat.
7:20 p.m. McDonald's - $5.28.  The Filet-O-Fish was back and I just had to get one.  I can't remember the last time I ate at a McDonald's for dinner.  It wasn't bad.
7:40 p.m. Logan Theater - $4.00.  I found the third Narnia movie every bit as bad as I found the first two.  It's weeks like this that make me want to give up seeing a movie at the Logan every week until I move.  So horribly juvenile.
11:26 p.m. Rocking Horse - $15.00.  Another Thursday night where I hadn't planned on going out, but I did anyway.  This was a particularly late and drinky night since it was somebody's birthday.

FRIDAY, MARCH 11 ($25.00)

12:16 p.m. Chicago Cultural Center - Free.  There was a trad Irish band playing in the main performance area, The Boils.  They were very entertaining.  I should really have gotten down here more during my unemployment but I'm so used to not being able to make lunchtime shows from when I worked in the West Loop, I didn't even think about it.  I also saw the Vivian Maier exhibit.  It was alright.  I just love candid street more.
1:29 p.m. Noodles & Company - Free.  I had a coupon from the last time I had went to this location.  This time I got the penne that I had been craving after Fat Tuesday.  It wasn't the greatest, but it was filling and free.
3:19 p.m. McCormick Tribune YMCA - Free.  Going this close to the Flogging Molly show might have been a bad idea, but it made for a great accomplishment.  It was the first time I had ever been to the gym three days in a row.  I'll have to pull this off a couple more times to make it to 100.
8:27 p.m. Congress Theater - $25.00.  Groupon was temporarily my favorite site when they put Flogging Molly tickets on sale for this date on discount at $18.00.  The show was every bit as amazing as the last time they played the Congress in 2008.  If not better.  I couldn't avoid getting one Guinness.  But it wasn't a drunken night as I was there alone.  Not like The Pogues.

SATURDAY, MARCH 12 ($24.26)

9:40 a.m. Belvidere Oasis - $3.85.  Getting up early to go to the protest in Madison was hard enough.  Eating beforehand would have been harder.  I'm glad I didn't since, apparently, the RSVP for the bus was not optional.  Thankfully, some people ducked out and I got a spot.  Eating at corporate McDonald's twice in one week didn't even register to me.  It was too early.
12:58 p.m. Shakti - $7.39.  After I stood around for a bit watching the small farmer's rally from behind the stage, standing on snow (at the behest of a guy I had met on the bus who was eager to see the stars of protest), I needed to warm up.  I had seen a button place on State Street and so I walked back until I found it.  They had so many Scott Walker protest buttons, it warmed my heart.  Though not my feet.
1:22 p.m. Fair Trade Coffee House - $7.75.  While it was much like a Starbucks in terms of feel, I did appreciate that this place stood behind the protesters and got them in and out with coffee quickly.  I did not appreciate how mediocre my cheddar sandwich was.  In Wisconsin.
3:07 p.m. Wisconsin State Capitol Building - Free.  I didn't go inside.  That would have been an invitation to get arrested, after all.  I politely listened to speakers for a while until I got really cold again.  I definitely saw enough and cheered enough to justify my spot on the bus (which was, technically, $5.00 but my new friend paid) but there were a lot of people with stronger constitutions than me.
5:06 p.m. Irish Pub - Free.  I ended up finding my new friend while waiting for the bus before it arrived.  We ducked into this pub for a Guinness or two.  He paid because I was unemployed.  Had I been back in Chicago, I would have had the same, but I probably would have paid a lot more.
7:11 p.m. Belvidere Oasis - $5.27.  On the way home, I was definitely more awake than on the way there.  A group I sat next to ended up discussing a lot of hotly charged political topics from very different perspectives. And after taking my anti-corporate Green stand, I couldn't avoid getting Taco Bell.  I'm an addict.

SUNDAY, MARCH 13 (Free)

3:05 p.m. McCormick Tribune YMCA - Free.  Even though my legs hurt from standing and marching all day, I figured that I needed to get back into the swing of things so I wouldn't get lazy again.

MONDAY, MARCH 14 ($23.50)

10:56 a.m. El Charro - $5.00.  I had planned on starting to get organized, but it was a free day at th Field Museum, so I got distracted.  And I got my usual pre-museum food of Huevos Rancheros.
1:10 p.m. Field Museum - $2.00.  At the end of my second free day, I realized there really wasn't much I hadn't seen the first time I was there while getting lost.  Though it was good to see it all at a slower pace and in context.  I like this museum but it's kind of depressing seeing all of the taxidermed animals and such.  The money was to check my backpack.
5:04 p.m. Drew's Eatery - $10.00.  While I love Hot Doug's, Mr. Sohn did let me down by getting rid of the veggie corn dog.  Drew's Eatery still has it.  And it was delicious.  They also have an item that Doug's never had - a veggie Coney dog (with veggie chili).  I'll probably go back to Doug's before I move, but I definitely want to go back to Drew's.  Even if it is slightly more expensive.
5:43 p.m. Starbucks - $4.00.  There's an adorable little indie coffee shop on the same street, Beans & Bagels.  I will probably never go to it because it closes early.  This forced me to the Starbucks down the street.  But the weather was good enough for their lemonade tea that I love so well.
6:33 p.m. First Slice Pie Cafe - $2.50.  It was Pi Day (3.14) and this was the only place that came to mind to get the delicious treat.  They had slices on sale for $1.00 as well.  They're usually $3.00, so while they're good, I don't know if I can afford them.

So that's $225.38.  Not horrible considering that a lot of that was slacks.  And those are going to be priceless once I find work.  Still, it's definitely a gluttonous amount that I'll need to give up during Lent.  Except for trying out new restaurants.  I've already got some plans to do that.  My total money spent while I've been unemployed is $1618.23.

Eating My Way Through My Last Month In Chicago

Tomorrow will mark the one month to go mark until I bid Chicago a semi-fond adieu.  While I haven't even started the physical process of moving, I know exactly what the first thing I need to do is.  I need to clean out almost everything from my apartment.  All the furniture has to go since I'm not paying to ship that stuff and it won't fit in a car.

But I think the first thing that I'm going to do is separate my books into the ones that I want to bring (for sentimental reasons or for the fact that I haven't read them, but plan to) and those that I'm giving to charity (probably Open Books).

It's more the mental attachments that I have to get rid of than the physical ones I think.  And, along this vein, as I've mentioned before, I'm going to try to clear a lot of my Yelp Chicago bookmarks.  Right now I have 272 of them.  Not all of them are in Chicago and not all of them are places I'll ever review.  But I'm trying to hit up the favorites of them that I want to hit one last time and write a parting review of.

But, even more in line with cutting the ties are 40 bookmarks of places that I never tried while I lived here.  20 of them I can live without but these 20 I really want to try in the following order (from most desired to least desired):

1. La Bocca Della Verita - Named after my favorite tourist attraction in Rome, it's supposed to be one of Chicago's best hidden Italian restaurants in Ravenswood. (TRIED: 4/27) YELP REVIEW: http://www.yelp.com/biz/la-bocca-della-verita-chicago#hrid:TmsYiA61QkxiH4rSDCdwOQ/
2. Moe's Tavern - It's a Simpson themed tavern in Avondale.  They even have a Flaming Moe on the mixed drink menu.
3. Zebda - A Mediterranean place that I've been wanting to try for a couple of years in Irving Park.
4. Victory's Banner - Pretty much the only vegetarian restaurant in Chicago I haven't visited.  It's only open for brunch. (TRIED: 3/23)
5. gastro-wagon - A new (but legendary) Naanwich place in Edgewater.
6. Dee's Place - Soul food in Wicker Park that isn't The Southern. But I'm not going to hold it against them.
7. Indie Cafe Thai & Sushi - A sushi place in Edgewater that I've been stalking from a distance for years.
8. Drew's Eatery - They've got a veggie dog in North Center that's supposed to rival the one at Hot Doug's without the line. (TRIED: 3/14) YELP REVIEW: http://www.yelp.com/biz/drews-eatery-chicago#hrid:TLFepGyCx9K2pq5R3r-pWw/
9. The Breakfast Club - A brunch place in the West Loop that is supposed to be worth waking up early for.
10. Ian's Pizza - I was just by its sister place in Madison this weekend, but this one in Lakeview has pasta pizzas that I want to try. (TRIED: 4/16)
11. First Slice - This North Center places serves pie.  Lots of kinds of pie (and a few other things).  How amazing is that? (TRIED: 3/14)
12. Huck Finn Donuts & Snack Shop - Wherever McKinley Park even is, this place is supposed to have the best doughnuts in town.
13. Cemitas Puebla - Cuban sandwiches merely blocks from my gym in Humboldt Park featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.  It's actually more amazing that I haven't made it here yet. (TRIED: 4/14) YELP REVIEW: http://www.yelp.com/biz/cemitas-puebla-chicago-2#hrid:cWZryS0vmtz4PNioVXOOfQ/
14. Taste Of Peru - When I was supposed to go to Peru a couple of years ago, the Rogers Park place basically at the top of the city was top on my list of Peruvian places to go.
15. Queen Albert Diner & Lounge - This place is supposed to have the most screwed up, hilarious karaoke in town.  A friend of mine put the idea in my head to go here a few year ago, but we never went.
16. Baladoche - A storefront crepe place in Lakeview that is supposed to use only the finest European ingredients served with attitude.
17. Urban Belly - The only of the "Avondale three" (along with Kuma's Corner and Hot Doug's) that people are willing to wait in line for I haven't been to.  Though I've heard mixed things about it.
18. Taqueria Traspada - Supposedly, this place in Noble Square has the best tacos in the entire city.  I've been told this by multiple people.
19. Tripoli Tap - A Lincoln Park bar that's devoted to the Red Sox.  I think I'll probably hit this one to open up the baseball season. (TRIED: 4/1)
20. Istanbul Restaurant - One of many Lakeview Turkish restaurants, but this is one that's not supposed to be missed.

I'm on my way to scratch off two of these in North Center as I type.  It's Pi Day, so I planned on going to First Slice regardless.  While I'm in the neighborhood, I figured I might as well go to Drew's Eatery as well to get a veggie dog before this treat.

So that means about 18 more in the 31 days before I move.  Which is, oddly enough, nearly the same amount of times until I need to go to the gym.  The two will probably end up being closely related.

How I Spent The Ninth Week Of The Rest Of My Life

Even though I'm not Catholic (not even religious), I know what I'm giving up for Lent.  I'm giving up spending as much as I have the past few days.  I was just throwing away money on Fat Tuesday.  But that's what it's about, I think.  Excess.  But now, approaching the last month of living in Chicago and all of the associated expenses that will come with moving, I have got to stop splashing the cash.  Except on trying restaurants that I've been wanting to try.

Now, being drunk yesterday came at a bigger cost.  I completely forgot to apply for the job that I posted on Sunday.  However, I did apply for one on Monday with Health and Human Services in Bethesda, MD that I found in a general search.

Now I hold nothing against my supervisor at my old job when I was in the Instructors area (who is now the Manager of the department I was laid off from I recently found out), though I do wish I had been allowed to participate in budgeting.  Of all the requirements in this position, I meet almost every one except for having worked in a budget.  Now, to be fair, I didn't ask to help with the budget, but I don't know where I can pick up this skill, it's been found in a lot of job descriptions I'm seeing with the government.

Today I've been sober and tonight there's another position closing.  I'm going to apply for that as soon as I'm done with this blog entry.  Ironically about...BUDGETING.  But not in the accounting way they're looking for.

Here's how I "spent" last week:

TUESDAY, MARCH 1 ($14.88)
  • 4:36 p.m. Borders - $14.88.  The Chicago Public Library completely let me down on my book club book.  Knowing that I at least wanted to start it before the meeting, I went to my favorite Borders in the city - Clark and Diversey - and they had one copy.  They were only at 20% off, but I snatched it up.  It will be sad to see this one go.  They never failed me.
  • 6:05 p.m. Gyood! - Free.  Using the second and final Groupon I had for them on the day it expired, I waited in an expected line.  I did not, however, expect the soft serve machine to break.  Or them to forget that I hadn't completed my order which included a Gyood! Cow (their root beer float).  Guh.  I had planned on going to the gym until this took over an hour.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 2 ($37.68)
  • 12:01 p.m. McCormick Tribune YMCA - Free.  After all the ice cream that I ate, even though some of it was lactose free, I felt the need to burn it out of my system a.s.a.p.
  • 1:57 p.m. Atlas Cafe - $10.00 - Since I needed to kill some time before walking my sister's dog, I decided to stop by this little international restaurant/coffee shop on Armitage.  It was every bit as amazing as I remember it, though not entirely conducive to reading the book.
  • 5:22 p.m. Jewel-Osco - $4.38 - I had planned on going to Walgreens after the gym the day before.  Since the gym didn't happen, a beard had attacked my face and wouldn't let go.  I bought razors at this very convenient grocery store near where my book club was meeting.
  • 5:41 p.m. The Coffee Studio - $3.30 - Oh my goodness, this coffee shop was fancy.  In comparison to the little thrown together look of the one I went to earlier, this looked like a classy sushi joint.  At least the wi-fi was free and the herbal tea was normal price.
  • 7:15 p.m. Edgewater Lounge - $20.00 - I couldn't follow the book club discussion at all since I only got about 70 pages into a book that was over 500.  But I did love the food and beer at this place one last time.  A lot of it.

THURSDAY, MARCH 3 ($74.36)
  • 12:59 p.m. Logan Theater - $4.00 - Blue Valentine absolutely blew my mind.  It wasn't as dirty as I heard that it was, so seeing it in a deserted movie theater in the middle of a day didn't seem as perverted as it had walking in.  It almost made me sick how real this movie felt though.
  • 7:42 p.m. Subway - $4.36 - Shockingly, I had never been to the Subway under the California Blue Line stop.  But I needed to grab something quick on the way to The Pogues.
  • 8:19 p.m. Congress Theater - $53.00.  The ticket was only $30.00, but since it was a Pogues show, I drank a few Guinnesses.  I didn't actually pay for the ticket though.  Instead I paid for the cab ride to the after bar.  Either way, I was not going to miss the farewell tour of this legendary band with its original lineup.
  • 12:04 a.m. Neo Nightclub - $13.00.  This included my portion of the cab ride home.  It was $2.00 PBR night so I got by dirt cheap.  Except for the $5.00 admission.  I hadn't been to Neo in a decade but it seemed as small as it ever had.

FRIDAY, MARCH 4 ($52.97)
  • 12:15 p.m. Chicago Public Library - Logan Square Branch - $0.80.  I accidentally let a pile of books go overdue the day before.  However, I also discovered something awesome for my fine trouble.  The One Book, One Chicago spring discussion is the first week of April.  So I'll get to participate one more time.
  • 1:12 p.m. Atlas Cafe - $4.00.  I wrote my Yelp review for the place on this day so I decided to stop by and grab something small on the way to the gym.  The lentil soup absolutely hit the spot to give me some energy that I should have gotten from eating breakfast.
  • 1:33 p.m. McCormick Tribune YMCA - Free.  It felt like I hadn't been really serious about going to the gym multiple days in a row up to this point (or at least I hadn't done it).  Since I got there "early," it meant I could get there late the next day and accomplish this!
  • 3:57 p.m. Taco Bell - $4.92.  I agreed to go on a pub crawl later and so I figured crappy food would be in order.  Not surprisingly, this was more than the healthy lentil soup I had earlier.
  • 7:18 p.m. Streetside Bar & Grill - $5.00.  This was actually the second bar of the crawl but I was sleeping off the Taco Bell at the time it started.  I just got one beer since I was not hungry at all.  That's the joy of junk food sitting in the stomach.
  • 8:28 p.m. Dorothy's Liquor's - $2.25.  Definitely the cheapest bar of the crawl.  They have $1.25 PBR on tap.  I was expected this package goods store/bar to be dark.  But it was actually lit up like a Christmas tree. I definitely couldn't become a drunk here.  The funny thing was Alderman Rey Colon (the hippest city council member in the United States) showed up while we were at Streetside and was holding court while we were here.
  • 10:00 p.m. Marble - $5.00.  Someone knocked over the one beer that I got.  But it was still fun.  And I still want to come back to this nicer bar and try the food.
  • 10:51 p.m. Weegee's Lounge - $22.00.  This included the cab that I had to take back to my part of Logan Square since it started to pour.  I was drunk enough to walk.  And too drunk to walk at the same time.
  • 2:24 a.m. El Charro - $9.00.  I got the brilliant idea that we should go to a 4:00 a.m. bar.  When there was a line, we just went to my late night Mexican place across the street.  I almost fell asleep at the table anyhow.

SATURDAY, MARCH 5 ($21.09)
  • 4:30 p.m. Aldi-Milwaukee - $17.69.  After all of the money that I spent the first two days of the weekend, my budget was completely blown.  I figured it was time to lock myself in my apartment with cheap food again.
  • 7:16 p.m. Bubbleland - $3.40.  While no offers to spend money came in, I knew that if I cloistered myself at the laundromat, I could avoid the temptation to go out.  It was definitely louder than it had been the past few times that I had been there.

SUNDAY, MARCH 6 ($11.00)
  • 10:32 a.m. McCormick Tribune YMCA - Free.  How I didn't get to the gym with a wide open Saturday, I'll never know.  But the point is that I didn't.  We'll call it a hangover.
  • 12:51 p.m. Inspiration Kitchens - Uptown - $11.00.  This is a not-for-profit mixed with a slightly upscale restaurant that donates all of its profits to charity for the homeless.  It was only $8.00 for a plate of eggs and such.  I didn't think it was great so I want to go back one more time.  I feel like I might have caught them on an off day.

MONDAY, MARCH 7 ($21.09)
  • 2:54 p.m. Navy Pier - Free.  Explore Chicago stated that there was a Polish festival for Pulaski Day.  It turned out that it had been the day before like every other ethnic festival at Navy Pier.  Since it was a holiday, there were still quite a few screaming children.  But I honestly don't hate the place as much as most Chicagoans and it was good to play tourist.
  • 3:38 p.m. Connie's Pizza - $6.09.  I figured as long as I was acting like a tourist, I might as well eat like a tourist as well.  At least I didn't go to one of Navy Pier's sitdown restaurants and waste a lot of money on crappy food.
  • 3:48 p.m. Smith Museum of Stained Glass - Free.  This has to be Chicago's most hidden museum.  Way in the back of Navy Pier, basically under the Shakespearean Theater it has dozens of pieces.  A lot of them probably really expensive.  These include monuments to both Jesus and Michael Jordan.
  • 5:42 p.m. McCormick Tribune YMCA - Free.  I was practically falling asleep on the way to the gym but I went anyway.  And I made it through my usual workout which meant that I finally went two days in a row.  Now if I can only do this 10 more times before I move, I've got my goal of 100 times at this gym.
  • 11:06 p.m. Skylark - $15.00.  I'm not sure when the next time I'll get to see my friend's band play, if ever, so I had to make my way down to Pilsen one last time.  And I had never tried their famous tater tots.  They were not the best I've ever had, but really pretty good.

So that's $233.07.  I'm pretty sure that I never even spent that much in a week while I was working. Okay, I rarely did.  Anyhow, it will probably be good if the Department of Health and Human Services doesn't see this particular week.  Maybe I'll work on a line item budget a couple of weeks before I move to Washington D.C. and it will look better.  My total money spent while I've been unemployed is $1392.85.
